99 Cent Store, How I Love Thee… October 25, 2010

Posted by Lil' C's Mommie in Uncategorized.

So, I’ve just rediscovered the awesomeness of the 99 Cent Store.  LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!

These are the ones that I saw at Target (well, similar) and didn’t pick up because it was $8 for a pack of 4.  Those sold out, so I’ve been looking online, but they are charging $2.50 each.  Way too expensive for my “almost free birthday party” plan.  So, I saw these and snatched them right up!  3 for $1!  You can’t beat that!  Now I just have to decide if I want to let the kids play with them at the party (which was my original intention) or to include them in with the party favors!

Oh, and I found this stuff there, too!  Not as exciting as the hand bop rockets, but I will be using this stuff to put together the jet packs.

$1 each.   Can’t beat $1!

I Finally Found One! …sort of… October 25, 2010

I’ve been looking and looking and looking for a decent astronaut costume that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.  Well, I finally found one.  Sort of.  I came across this “race car driver” outfit, which was a one piece jumpsuit, with red stripes along the arms and legs, just like an astronaut outfit.  Perfect!  The only thing I’d have to do is cover up the car racing pictures on the front.  I found it at a thrift store while I was on vacation.  They wanted $8 for it, but I got it down to $6!  Yes!  But then I also came across some other astronaut paraphernalia at another thrift store.  An inflatable jet pack and an astronaut “shirt”.  Both for $3.  The jet pack and the top were both too big, but I know I’ll be able to get the top to fit.  Which is perfect to cover up the car racing pictures. Now to just get Christian to actually want to be an astronaut and not a race car driver!!  And he wants the car in the picture really bad.

I picked up a few more items today!  I received this bag of 2-liter bottles free from a fellow Freecycler, so now I can start making the jet packs!

Now I just need packing peanuts to fill them with!  I have a request out now.

I’ve found a few things over the past couple of weeks.  I received these cups through Freecycle, they are for the rocket booster part of the jet packs that I’m going to make:

They aren’t red, but I think I might like the blue better!

Carl had some blue and red electrical tape!  We’ll be using it on the helmet and possibly the costume.

One of my Freecycle group members has offered to make tags for the cellophane bags, where I’m going to be putting the “cosmic crayons” in.

She sent me a picture of the “galactic” card that she made for her grandson’s 5th birthday.  It’s so cute!  She said that she would use the background and I told her that the retro rocket in the top left corner would be perfect for the tags!

We’ve been going back and forth, sharing ideas and I believe this is what we’ve settled on so far.  We are going to shorten the length of the tag by putting the saying on two lines, like this:

I hope you had a
blast at my party!

And then put the rocket on the other side of the tag.

It’s going to be so cute!!

I Love Freecycling September 25, 2010

Freecycling is the act of giving away (read: “FREE”) usable unwanted items to others instead of disposing of them in landfills.

Yesterday, I posted a “Wanted” list for some of the more “projecty” items that I’ll need to make some of the party favors and decorations.  I immediately got two amazing responses back!

Here’s the first one:

“I have a pringles container, and tons of crayons you are welcome to.  I was going to make candles, but just didn’t.  The crayones are already peeled, even.  BONUS!  That’s a very time-consuming job that I did late at night.

Interested?  Let me know when you could pick up and I’ll send you my address.”

I picked them up today and she was right, A TON OF CRAYONS!  Plus, they were sorted, and bagged by color!  All peeled, as well.  I think that just saved me at least an hour or two.  Yes!

I’m sooooo happy!  Now I’m going to be able to make the Cosmic Crayons, to add to the goody bag for the kids to take home.

She also put an empty Pringles can in the bag, along with the crayons.  I put “empty Pringles cans” on my list because I think they will work better as the base for the goody “bag” than coffee cups would be.  Plus, I was hoping that they would be tall enough to hold the comic books that I got from Tom and Becky.  And they are!!!

And I’ll be wrapping them, along the lines of one of these ideas:

Bag o’crayons?  Check.  First out of 12 Pringles cans needed?  Check.

Here’s the second email I got:

“I do rubber stamping and can stamp some images for you if you’d like. I also have cellophane bags that you can use to put candy in. I can do a little topper for them and you can fill them up and staple the topper on so they can take home a little bag of sweets.”

How sweet is that?!!?  I can’t believe how generous people in my  Freecycle group are!  And perfect timing because I’ll be using the cellophane bags for the cosmic crayons!

Not to be the boss of her, but I would love retro rocket tags with “I hope you had a blast at my party!” on the other side of the tag!  Perfect!

Happy day, happy day!  Everyone do the happy dance!  Now, I just need to actually MAKE them.

And then I saw this Rocket Tent on the Target website and had to post it.  This is TOO CUTE!!

Vellum to the Rescue September 19, 2010

I picked up a couple of things for the party today.  I also came to the realization that Christian would probably rather have a Dora the Explorer party.  It’s the only program he wants to watch nowadays.  He doesn’t even ask for Little Einsteins anymore.  He is learning Spanish though.  Anyhow, here’s what I found:

I got some “round” balloons today at Target.  There were 50 in a bag, all sizes, for only $1.25.  Now I can start thinking about making planets with paper mache.  Oh boy.

I rooted around in my cards and envelopes drawer and discovered that I have 12 glassine envelopes.  I still need to do the guest list, so I hope I won’t need more than that.  But if I do, I remembered that I have a pad of vellum paper that I had purchased once upon a time when I used to scrapbook.  It’s transparent, like glassine!  YAY!  I found an envelope template website so I’m all set!

UPDATE: As of this morning he’s been watching Little Einsteins!  Whew!!

Saturn’s Rings September 15, 2010

I went to go check out the brand new Salvation Army thrift store in Fountain Valley today.  It was like I was walking into a TJ Maxx or something.  So clean, bright and just plain fancy.  I found another item to add to the party favors:

It’s a set of 15, so I’ll have plenty.  They come straight (not in a circle), so I’m not sure how I’m going to put them in the party favor container.  Hmmm, but I only paid $3.
